During his life, public reception of Degas' work ranged from admiration to contempt. As a promising artist in the conventional mode, and in the several years following 1860, Degas had a number of paintings accepted in the Salon. These works received praise from Pierre Puvis de Chavannes and the critic, Castagnary.

Degas soon joined forces with the Impressionists, however, and rejected the rigid rules, judgements, and elitism of the Salon—just as the Salon and general public initially rejected the experimentalism of the Impressionists.

Degas's work was controversial, but was generally admired for its draftsmanship. The suite of nudes Degas exhibited in the eighth Impressionist Exhibition in 1886 produced "the most concentrated body of critical writing on the artist during his lifetime. ... The overall reaction was positive and laudatory." His La Petite Danseuse de Quatorze Ans, or Little Dancer of Fourteen Years, was probably his most controversial piece, with some critics decrying what they thought its "appalling ugliness" while others saw in it a "blossoming."

Recognized as an important artist by the end of his life, Degas is now considered "one of the founders of impressionism". His involvement with the other major figures of Impressionism and their exhibitions, his dynamic paintings and sketches of everyday life and activities, and his bold colour experiments, among other things, serve to finally tie him to the Impressionist movement as one of its greatest early artists, though his work crossed many stylistic boundaries.

His paintings, pastels, drawings, and sculpture—most of the latter were not intended for exhibition, and were discovered only after his death—are on prominent display in many museums.

Although Degas had no formal pupils, he greatly influenced several important painters, most notably Jean-Louis Forain, Mary Cassatt, and Walter Sickert; his greatest admirer may have been Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec

Parastone, a renown European collectible figurine manufacturer, has masterfully brought to life this legendary painting by the artist Edgar Degas, as an intricate 3D statue adaptation in the greatest detail.

Doggie People

It's anthropomorphic engineering; it’s what we do better than anyone else in the dog figurine world. The personification of the many and varied breeds of dog in the world is our business. We like to think that our research of the human subjects and our knowledge of the chosen breed of dog give us the magical "double take".

We endeavour with every project to cause whimsical confusion, so that our morph is a unique character: neither dog nor man, but a truly convincing member of the "Doggie People" population.

THE BAND

Jazz is indisputably one of the pillars of today's popular music. What once could be heard on the cotton plantations in America's deep South, has developed into one ofthe world's most popular misic genres. Although other musical forms, namely rock and roll (of which Jazz was the founder), overtook it in mass popularity in the 50's and 60's, Jazz can still measure up to the best today's popular music has to offer and its popularity continues to grow.

The hundred year old history of Jazz is all embracing and colourful. We can only now imagine the enormous impact the lve orchestra's which played in the American and later.
English nightclubs during the 20's must have had! Athough popular amoung a select group of advocates from the beginnig, recognition and acceptance by the general public was long in coming and not helped by the unfavourable reviews of music journalists unused to the new sound. Politically too many Afro-American Jazz musicans suffered discrimination and it was not until the late 1960's that their personal situation began to significantly improve.

During its first century Jazz misic has seen many changes: from the "Swingera of the 30's through to the "Jitterbug"and the evolution of "Bebop"in the 50's, to our present day star performers all inspired by those first live orchestra's whose sound led their audiences to dance and be happy all those years ago.

The worldleaders as cartoons placed on a battlefield.
A unique and revoluating chess game with high quality porcelain hand painted figures, produced in limited, certified numbered versions.

PoliticalChess started with version 1.0 in September 2005 and continued with changes on version 1.1 in September 2006. A lot happened in the world already since then and the launch of PoliticalChess version 1.2 shows some of this.

The disappearing participants are Mr. Berlusconi, who lost the elections in Italy some time ago. The only news we hear from him is about more court cases, in fact not any news anymore. It seems to be one of his daily activities.
We replaced Mr. Berlusconi by Mr. Hugo Chaves. Mr. Chavez of Venezuela earned this place by winning the December 2006 elections overwhelmingly. His new 6 years term starts January 10th 2007. Mr. Chavez must like it on the playground, visiting his friends Mr. Fidel Castro, Mr. Ahmadinejad and Mr. Gadaffi.

Also disappearing is Mr. Arafat. The reason of his disappearing is partly because he is not among us anymore already for some time and because the Palestinian situation is worse than ever. Who could ever have thought of this? We replaced the pawn Arafat by Mr. Muammar al-Gadaffi. Mr. Gadaffi has been a long time supporter of the Palestine Liberation Organisation and is a friend of Chavez and Ahmadinejad.

After a life of supporting terrorism he became smoother and even paid compensation for the Lockerbie bombing. Mr. Gadaffi probably has bad feeling paying euro 10 million per victim, because he asks euro 10 million per infected child, said to be done by 5 Bulgarian nurses for which it is proven that the children already were infected before the nurses came to Libya

The third participant disappearing is Mr. Sharon, an Israeli hero dying for many months who probably missed Mr. Arafat in his last year he was active. Time for fun is really over watching Mr. Olmert now, looking for his kidnapped soldier, building walls and making war. We replaced Mr. Sharon by Mr. John Howard, prime minister of Australia, and strong supporter of Mr. Bush. One thing Mr Howard might consider: “It’s not compulsory to fight all Mr. Bush’s wars with Australian soldiers“. A quotation from Israeli source: The prime minister may be having his troubles at home, but there is one country were he would win a popularity contest easily.

Hiëronymus Bosch

From an artistic point of view, the world famous brilliant forerunner of surrealism was, in his day, unique and radically different. Hiëronymus (Jeroen for schort) Bosch was born during the transition from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, in the Duchy of Brabant. Bosch places visionary images in a hostile world full of mysticism, with the conviction that the human being, due to its own stupidity and sinfulness has become prey to the devil himself. He holds a mirror to the world with his cerebral irony and magical symbolism, sparing no one. He aims his mocking arrows equally well at the hypocrisy of the clergy as the extravagance of the nobility and the immorality of the people. Hiëronymus Bosch’s style arises from the tradition of the book illuminations (manuscript illustrations from the Middle Ages). The caricatural representation of evil tones down its terrifying implications, but also serves as a defiant warning with a theological basis.

THE TEMPATION OF SAINT ANTHONY
Saint Anthony won a lot of praise in Hiëronymus Bosch's heyday. He resisted diabolical temptations, in sharp contrast with the ordinary mortals, as this triptych portrays in splendid colours. The closed panels show the arrest and crucifixion of Jesus.

Bernard the Cunning Artificer (by the one who knows him well)

Bernard was born on a Friday 13th in 1946 in London and if asked, his mother would say he was an exceedingly small "no bigger than a chicken my dear" baby. Since then he has grown a bit.

He is one of those rare people who from an early age, knew what he wanted to be when he grew up. It's debatable whether in fact he has "grown up" but I suspect that is the secret of his success as a designer. If pressed to describe what his occupation is, he will say variously potter, sculptor, designer, or story teller.

In spite of a education which was very secondary and not at all modern, he managed to get into art college for a while before dropping out and setting up his first pottery in 1967. Things looked up in 1980 when he and his wife Isobel started Clarecraft from a small shed in the suffolk village of Clare and since then desgning and potting established him as one of the most original designers in the British Gift Industry and through his designs, Clarecraft soon established a niche market for producing unusal (some would say down-right ugly) artifacts.

From the early 1980’s, Guillermo Forchino experiments with various materials to create works of art in volume. This research began at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Rosario, Argentina and then continued with three years of studies in art restoration and conservation at the Sorbonne University in Paris, France. During his studies he discovered and mastered classic techniques and materials.

After completing his studies in Paris, he returned to Argentina where he directed the Juan B. Castagnino atelier of art restoration for the Museum of Beaux-Arts of Rosario.

It was during this period that Forchino began creating figures made from wrapped bands of cloth where the visible parts of the body (head and hands) were made from wax and paper maché colored with natural pigments.

From the end of the 1980’s, Forchino chose poly resins to create figures and scenes that resemble the world of comic strip and cartoon characters. They are typically unusual and humorous subjects such as a family leaving on vacation in an overloaded car with flat tires or a tired, old American pick-up truck from the 1950’s. He has used other modes of transportation such as boats, planes and motorcycles and has even used a bathtub for a military dictator. His characters are always handled with humor and finesse and given a soul.

He has had regular expositions in France and in Argentina.

Guillermo Forchino lives and works in Paris in his workshop two steps away from the Père Lachaise cemetery.

The Comic Art of Guillermo Forchino is now available for a larger group of art lovers in the form of limited edition, numbered series. Found only in specially selected stores, each piece is identified by a numbered stamp on the bottom.

It comes wrapped in the newspaper “The Forchino Times” along with the autobiography of Forchino and pictures of his collection. A certificate of authenticity completes the package.

Each unique piece is made of handpainted resin

Dalí

Sublimated his life in his art of painting.
Relying on great craftsmanship, acquired in all sorts of art experiments, he lifted surrealism, in an inimitable self-willed manner, to exceptional heights.

He photographed, as it were, associatively what was enacted in his mind. Incited by, at the time, new psychological insights he tried to fix his subconscious with images, and to visualise his dreams in all their inscrutable symbolism. It was for this purpose that he developed his famous "paranoid-critical" method.

To us, one dimensional mortal souls, only the paintings and other expressions remain as fascinating witnesses to a literally unbelievably intense and active life. Perhaps we are so drawn to them because not only do they allow us to have a look inside Dahlí's subconscious, but they also are a mirror reflecting our own souls.

Parastone studios lifted the images out of the flat surface.

The Black Cape, 1894 (Illustration with the text of the play Salome by Oscar Wilde. The play Salome which Oscar Wilde wrote for Sarah Bernhardt formed the source of inspiration for Beardsley’s famous drawing of Salome who kisses John the Baptist’s decapitated head.

Wilde was impressed with Beardsley’s work and asked him to make ten illustrations for the English publication of the play. Beardsley started working on the assignment after a trip to France, where he was imposed by symbolists like Moreau en Redon.

The drawings as such rendered a lot of admiration, but their wittiness and elegance seem to undermine the high pretences of the play. They were criticized because neither the style nor the symbolism depicted the text. Wilde also thought them to be too Japanese for his Byzantium play which definitely was the case with The Black Cape. The mutual affection between both artists remained however unaffected.

HONORÉ DAUMIER (1808-1879)
A master in political and social caricatures from turbulent 19th century Paris. The French painter, lithographer and, above all, caricaturist Daumer was born in Marseille. He was the son of a stained-glass artist. Soon after, the needy family moves to Paris, where the restless and insecure Honoré takes some lessons at the Académie Suisse and later at the Boudoir studios. Publisher Ricourt is the first to recognize the power of Daumiers caricatural lithographs. During the July revolt in 1830 the young Daumer has strong republican sympathies. The publication of his political cartoons on the “king of the civilians” Louis-Philipe results in a six-month jail sentence in the St. Pélagie prison. In 1835 he becomes known among a wide republican circle with his clair-obscure lithos, amongst which the famous Rue Transnonain, le 15 avril 1834. With great craftsmanship he draws the harsh reality of social injustice, which is highly appreciated by Baudelaire and even Ingres. From that time onwards he draws thousands of lithos for the social satirical daily “Le Charivari”. The captions to many of his drawings are mainly suggested by his publisher Philipon – Daumier does not put that much value on them and he concentrates himself on the expressiveness of his work. Now finally financial secure he marries young Didine, with whom he will be sharing the rest of his life. The couple settles in Isle St. Louis, a neighbourhood that has a profound intellectual bohemian character. During his life the political constitution of France radically changes over and over again, and every time Daumer criticizes the changes from a cynical, but egalitarian point of view. As of 1835, political censorship forces him to limit himself to only criticize social life. Only in the three years which follow the 1848 revolution he is free to aim his satirical arrows at politics. It is then that he creates the immortal characters Robert Macaire and Patapoil. After an eventful life filled with political indignation and pungency, poverty and underestimated artistic aspirations he retreats and settles in Valmondois in 1871. Due to the deteriorating of his eye-sight he doesn’t work anymore.

GIUSEPPE ARCIMBOLDO (CA. 1527-1593)

Initially, like his father, the Renaissance painter Arcimboldo worked as a painter on Milan Cathedral. This changed in 1562 when the Emperor of Hapsburg, Ferdinand I, summoned him to the royal court in Prague. Ferdinand’s successors, Maximillian II and Rudolph II, were also much taken with Arcimboldo’s marvelous talents and so, for nearly all of the rest of his life, he remained in the service of this court, not only as a painter, but also as an architect, a designer of bizarre settings and costumes, and an organizer of major festivities. His work was much appreciated both for its sense of craftsmanship as well as its artistic value, and its eccentric, if sometimes comical aspects, may have made a welcome change to the day-to-day harsh political reality. Arcimboldo owes his present-day fame to his artistic discovery of the composite head. He painted his first version of The Four Seasons – portraits composed of flowers, fruit, twigs and leaves – soon after his arrival in Prague.

Parastone, a renown European collectible figurine manufacturer, has masterfully brought to life this legendary paintings (3) by the artist Arcimbolo, as intricate 3D statues adaptation in the greatest detail.

MAURITS CORNELIS ESCHER (1898-1972)

Early life
Maurits Cornelis, or "Mauk" as he came to be nicknamed[1], was born in Leeuwarden (Friesland), the Netherlands. He was the youngest son of civil engineer George Arnold Escher and his second wife, Sara Gleichman. In 1903, the family moved to Arnhem where he took carpentry and piano lessons until he was thirteen years old.

From 1903 until 1918 he attended primary and secondary school. Though he excelled at drawing, his grades were generally poor, and he was required to repeat the course twice. In 1919, Escher attended the Haarlem School of Architecture and Decorative Arts. He briefly studied architecture, but switched to decorative arts and studied under Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita, with whom he would remain friends for years. In 1922 Escher left the school, having gained experience in drawing and making woodcuts.

Klimt was a prominent member of an innovating group of artists called 'Sezession' and is considered to be one of the main pioneers of modern art. Apart from this, his ornamental Jugendstil style evokes an irresistible feeling which is inspired by the 'fin-de-siecle' of 19th century Vienna: elitist, liberal-middle class, decadent, pleasantly-decorative. His work is extremely recognizable due to his monumental style combined with Byzantine-like ornamental art and classical symbolism, created against the background of romanticism which was so characteristic of his time. In Sezession's own words: "Art guides us to an ideal realm, the only place where we will be able to find pure joy, pure happiness and pure love. A choir of angels from paradise. Joy given by divine sparkles. That kiss from the entire world!"Gustav Klimt

Peter Fagan initially began producing bronze animals and objects. These were successful but interest really grew with the creation of a painted bronze cat.

Peter Fagan changed the bronze for a ceramic resin and put his cats in a variety of situations and, in 1983, the Home Sweet Home collection was created.

The cats were an enormous hit and the Colour Box Teddies, which first appeared in 1987, have also been hugely popular.

The Teddy collection, many modelled on Peter's own antique teddy collection, reflects all styles of teddy bears. Each teddy is accompanied by its own story.

Pictured right is True Scot a recent introduction from Peter Fagan

Although Colour Box closed in 2000, Peter still continues to model his popular pieces today from his home in Berwick Upon Tweed.

The collection is sold worldwide through KoKo and the Peter Fagan Collectors Club and include the Home Sweet Home cats as well as bears and gollies.

PIETER BRUEGEL THE ELDER (ca. 1528 - 1569)

The painter Pieter Breughel is mainly known as a chronicler of everyday life in the Flemish countryside with paintings such as "Proverbs" and "Children's games", but Breughel's work has another side which reminds us of Hiëronymus Bosch (+1516). Like with all early artists the warning morality was a large factor. People felt they were surrounded by a hostile world filled with natural and human violence, epidemic diseases and other threats for which they had no other explanation but the hands of fate. It was left to artists and the clergy to show how destiny could be influenced favourably. Nevertheless, Breugel was light-hearted as well. He evoked a feeling of alienation by placing playful scenes before impressing and beautifully painted landscapes and with hilarious exaggeration "Pieter the funny one", as was his nickname, provoked laughter amongst his contemporaries.

ANGELOS
ANGELS The announcement to Maria of the birth of Christ by the Archangel Gabriel characterises the role of the angel: the "Angelos", the heavenly messenger, a credible conveyor of God’s will, readily believed where prophets are often ignored. When not conducting God’s business, the angels occupy themselves by gathering together in great numbers to sing His praises. In paintings, the angels complete this ritual by playing heavenly instruments. According to the old Hebrew faith, angels had a physical presence. They could mingle among humans, only to be recognised when they made their message heard. In the first century BC, angels lost this material quality and became spiritual entities, who could only communicate with humans in an ethereal capacity. This gave rise to a lively angel cult as expressed in Jewish apocryphal writings. The winged angel, so familiar to us now, first emerged in the fourth century in analogy of winged figures from the ancient classics, such as Nike. During the Middle Ages, the angels were ranked according to a celestial hierarchy consisting of nine “orders”, the highest being the Seraphim (gifted with love), followed by Cherubim (gifted with knowledge) and the Thrones (privy to Gods creation). The Dominations, Virtues and Powers, are followed by the Principalities and the Archangels, who deliver the most significant messages. The other angels were charged with less important messages. A separate category is formed by the guardian angels that assist people in making the right choices during their mortal existence. "Putti" are not members of the “orders” either. These chubby angels first appeared during the Renaissance, inspired by tales from classic mythology. The putto illustrates how the ethereal angel appears in many guises over many centuries of art, depending on the dominant religious convictions and the artistic prevalence of the period.

Matthias Grünewald

or "Mathis" (as first name), "Gothart" or "Neithardt" (as surname), (c. 1470 – August 31, 1528), was an important German Renaissance painter of religious works, who ignored Renaissance classicism to continue the expressive and intense style of late medieval Central European art into the 16th century.

Only ten paintings (several consisting of many panels) and thirty-five drawings survive, all religious, although many others were lost at sea in the Baltic on their way to Sweden as war booty. His reputation was obscured until the late nineteenth century, and many of his paintings attributed to Albrecht Dürer, who is now seen as his stylistic antithesis. His largest and most famous work is the Isenheim Altarpiece in Colmar, Alsace (now in France).

Parastone, a renown European collectible figurine manufacturer, has masterfully brought to life this legendary iconic painting of the Bird Beat from the Temptation of St. Anthony by the artist Grunewald, as an intricate 3D statue adaptation in the greatest detail.

The popularity of Rodin's most famous sculptures tends to obscure his total creative output. A prolific artist, he created thousands of busts, figures, and sculptural fragments over more than five decades. He painted in oils (especially in his thirties) and in watercolors. The Musée Rodin holds 7,000 of his drawings and prints, in chalk and charcoal, and 13 vigorous drypoints. He also produced a single lithograph.

Portraiture was an important component of Rodin's oeuvre, helping him to win acceptance and financial independence. His first sculpture was a bust of his father in 1860, and he produced at least 56 portraits between 1877 and his death in 1917. Early subjects included fellow sculptor Jules Dalou (1883) and companion Camille Claudel (1884). Later, with his reputation established, Rodin made busts of prominent contemporaries such as English politician George Wyndham (1905), Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw (1906), Austrian composer Gustav Mahler (1909), and French statesman Georges Clemenceau (1911).

FRANCOIS POMPON (1855-1933)
French sculptor, student of Rodin and famous for his stylized animal figures.
During his education he meets Pierre-Louis Rouillard, a sculptor of animal figures – who possibly became a source of inspiration for the work which would make him famous later on.

It is not until 1919 that his work starts attracting more interest. He sells a stone sculpture of a turtledove to Musée de Luxembourg and two years later three plaster animal figures to Musée de Grenoble. Not until he is 67 years old does he get his final breakthrough with the exhibition of l’Ours Blanc in plaster at the Salon des Artistes Français. Successful exhibitions follow in Tokyo and Osaka and the ice bear, which had become famous by then, is produced in marble. The museum of Saint-Omer buys several of his pieces and in 1929 the ice bear finds a permanent place in Musée de Luxembourg. Upon his death, Pompom left nearly 300 pieces to the French state which were eventually displayed at the Musée des Beaux Arts in Dijon. The Musée d’Orsay in Paris has a large collection of plaster models.

UKIYO-E

Can be categorized into two periods: the Edo period, which comprises ukiyo-e from its origins in the 1620s until about 1867 , when the Meiji period began, lasting until 1912 . The Edo period was largely a period of calm that provided an ideal environment for the development of the art in a commercial form; while the Meiji period is characterized by new influences as Japan opened up to the West.

The roots of ukiyo-e can be traced to the urbanization that took place in the late 16th century that led to the development of a class of merchants and artisans who began writing stories or novels, and painting pictures, compiled in ehon (絵本, picture books, books with stories and picture illustrations), such as the 1608 edition of Tales of Ise by Hon'ami Kōetsu. Ukiyo-e were often used for illustrations in these books, but came into their own as single-sheet prints (e.g., postcards or kakemono-e) or were posters for the kabuki theater. Inspirations were initially Chinese tales and artworks. Many stories were based on urban life and culture; guidebooks were also popular

Amedeo Modigliani's work is recognised immediately by many people because of the typical elongated shapes. His paintings show his passion for sculpting, a craft which he had to give up in 1915 due to ill health.

He was born in the Tuscan town of Livorno and received his academic education in Florence and Venice. In 1906 he established himself in the famous Montmartre area in Paris, where his talent was instantly recognised by the East European avant-garde. He had a short and eventful artistic life, he was extremely driven and longed for recognition.

But his life was also marked by alcoholism, metaphysical fears and progressive tuberculosis. At the age of forty, Modigliani left the world an oeuvre that shows a sincere, obsessive search for truth and purity within art.

Parastone, a renown European collectible figurine manufacturer, brought the Art of Modigliani nearby, as an intricate 3D statue adaptation in the greatest detail.

Forme uniche della continuità nello spazio (1913)

In 1912, Boccioni wrote his ‘Manifesto technico della scultura futuristica’.
He advocated experimenting with the simultaneous use of different materials in dynamic forms, with a focus on the “abstract reconstruction and not the figurative, form-determining meaning of planes and volumes”.

The bronze figure with the telling title ‘Unique forms of continuity in space’ reflects his approach to life, as a futurist, which was lively, dynamic and future-oriented.

CHARLES RENNIE MACKINTOSH (1868-1928)

This extremely versatile Scottish artist played a prominent role in the Arts and Crafts movement in Great Britain and his name became synonymous with the independent Northern European version of Art Nouveau. Mackintosh can be interpreted as a decorative orientated architect who drew his inspiration from symbolism and the art of fine Japanese drawing. During his relatively short working life he developed his very own linear-decorative style with a recognisable use of colours. It was these elements in particular that made his interior designs become world famous and unforgettable. Like no one else, he combined a strict architectural theory of shapes with a playful lyricism which goes back to the Pre-Raphaelites and Celtic ornamentation.

HENRI TOULOUSE LAUTREC

After a romantic/academic education, Henri soon felt attracted to the city life of Paris with her avant-gardists such as Cézanne and, more especially, Degas.

He felt at home in Montmartre, with its humour, irony and its fancy dress parties so typical of the fin de siècle. He was a regular customer of the cabaret bar "Le Mirliton" and for its owner, the singer Aristide Bruant, he designed wall paintings and magazine covers.

It was the poster for 'Le Moulin Rouge', though, which brought him instant fame in 1891. He executed his compositions, with their unusual perspective and radical cut-outs, in contrasting colour schemes and flamboyant style. After a number of very productive years Toulouse-Lautrec appears to lose his grip on life.

He dies in his parental home, the Chateau de Marlome in Albi, at the age of thirty-six.

Parastone studios lifted the images of Lautrec out of the flat surface.
